Using Woodworking Plans to Build Projects Faster

TedsWoodworking Plans and Projects

This small article is more of a general tip.

Woodworking requires creativity and innovation.  However, there will be times when using plans will help you build more efficiently.  There are an infinite number of plans that you can find on the internet. Some are free and some have cost, but finding the right plans for your woodworking niche can save you both time and money.

How To Find A “Good” Plan

A good plan will allow you to build better and easier than you could have done by trail and error on your own. Especially in the beginning, you may find that using a plan will help you eliminate some problems that would have otherwise cropped up.  A good plan will tell you not only what materials to buy, but what type of tools and equipment you need for the project.  A good plan will also allow you to build something that you might not have been building before, but that your customers have been asking about. If you build coffee and end table, but have never built a dining room table, finding the right plan will help you move out of your normal realm and expand your business.

Because there are so many woodworking plans available, you will find that some are better than others. It is best to stick with plans that come from established and professional woodworkers, especially at first, so that you can avoid spending time and money on inferior plans that will produce and inferior product. Reading reviews online about the plans you are looking at is always a good idea as it allows you to learn from the experiences of others who have used the plans before you buy it.

A good plan will tell you if you need more space for a given project and it will also tell you what your approximate budget should be. This way there are no surprises after you get started. A good plan should make what you are dong easier, not making you engage in guesswork.  You should be able to see everything from start up to finish beforehand.

Some plans are also somewhat customizable so that you can incorporate your own ideas into the design.  You will find that some plans allow the woodworker to put their own creative spin on things, thus coming up with a unique finished product.  If you are just starting out, don’t be afraid to try out some of the free plans that you will find online and then graduate on to the more advanced, and possibly costly plans as you get more familiar with the process.
